Love in times of bureaucracy

With subtle humor and formal clarity, Karin Sander brings everyday objects into new contexts of meaning. Her work on the Office Works series began in 1992 during a working stay in the New York / USA, where she exhibited sheets of paper from a stack of ordinary printer paper that had been folded, creased, labeled, and stapled, using the entire repertoire of desk utensils. To date, Sander has created more than 1,500 works in this way, in which she transfers everyday office materials into a new, artistic context. Her gestures are sometimes minimal, sometimes expansive, but always surprising and—literally—to the point. It appears as if the artist navigates her way through the often monotonous office work - that is, unfortunately, part and parcel of an artist's life - with ease and a twinkle in her eye. At the same time, however, her Office Works can also be read as a critical commentary on bureaucracy, efficiency thinking, and the often boring aesthetics of everyday working life.
